A five-mile stretch of Interstate 65 through Louisville has been closed for renovations in both directions since June 1 and is scheduled to fully reopen Aug. 1. The closure was first announced on Aug. 27, 2025, by Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, plenty of time for Louisville’s mayor, Craig Greenberg, and other city officials to prepare for the traffic onslaught.

As this city’s own web site says:

Local & City Streets: Managed by the Louisville Department of Transportation. They handle neighborhood paving, pothole repairs, traffic signs, sidewalk maintenance, and snow removal on city-owned roads. 

The closure has had a direct effect on my neighborhood, as I noted last month and warned of in late May.

There’s a railroad bridge called the “Can Opener” near the University of Louisville campus on Third Street and Eastern Parkway. It got its name, because truck drivers (who aren’t paying attention) end up with the tops of their trailers shorn off: The bridge is only 11 feet and 8 inches high.

During the first week of the highway closure, I posted this photo:

Huge trailer trucks are using side streets to bypass the closed highway, and a lot of them have used Third Street. This photo was taken a little more than a mile from my house. The above crash wasn’t a one off.

Mayor Greenberg, an ICE-ass-kissing, Quizling Democrat, is supposed to ensure traffic through the city runs smoothly. We already know he doesn’t care about people being kidnapped by the Orange Menace’s Gestapo: An immigrant who was working on our neighbor’s roof was carted away by ICE thugs last week.

We now also know he doesn’t care if streets are safe for our drivers. This happened a week ago:

Notice how sick this is!? There are so many semis running into the “Can Opener” that television crews can sit and wait for the next disaster. Am I exaggerating?

One news report notes that a number of these trucks are rentals, and their drivers are on the hook for the damage. Insurance won’t cover driving into a bridge that has a warning sign.

There are a couple of signs on the western side of the southbound street, and we have this tiny warning on the bridge:

There’s another elevated warning sign a little more than a football field north of the bridge that should be flashing every minute of every day since the highway was closed. Here’s a picture of that sign:

That’s north of the bridge, headed south. Want to know what drivers are seeing south of the bridge headed north? TEETH!

And it’s not like the city didn’t know this was a problem. It’s been happening for decades:

We suspect that before the highway closed, no one in city government did something as simple as get in their car, turn on their GPS and follow the directions it gave to get from one part of the closed highway to the other. Seems pretty certain that if they did, they’d have seen the GPS take the simple route: Third Street. Knowing that, the city could have been more vigilant ensuring sure we had proper signage for big trucks.

Greenberg is flaunting his incompetence as mayor. His focus is on the business interest of the wealthiest people in Louisville and not on the day-to-day lives of his constituency.

Despite all the road damage and human-rights violations he’s inflicted on the city, Greenberg is favored to win re-election in November. He’s running against Metro Councilwoman and community activist Shameka Parrish-Wright, who is Black.

We already know that more than 40% of the area population won’t vote for a Black woman no matter how incompetent the White male candidate is. Here are the results of the 2024 presidential election for Jefferson County, where Louisville is located.

There literally has been millions of dollars in vehicle and road damage because of the “Can Opener,” and that is coming out of the pocket of drivers and of the citizens of Louisville. The mayor’s job is to keep people safe and make sure roads are drivable. Greenberg fails on both counts, but he’s favored by the Louisville’s ruling class and business interests, so we’re going to see a lot more of carnage.
