I just read a Substack piece by Glenn Kessler, who worked at The Washington Post the same time I did (yes, I did edit his copy back then), and this piece of GOP perfidy from the late 20th century jumped out at me:

In 1993, Bill Clinton pushed through Congress a massive budget bill designed to reduce the federal deficit, ostensibly a goal of fiscal conservatives. But Republicans — led by Rep. Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) — relentlessly attacked Clinton’s budget and managed to convince many voters that Clinton boosted taxes on every American. In reality, while taxes went up on the rich, a big expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit reduced taxes for lower-income people. But those facts didn’t matter when control of Congress was at stake.

I knew Democrats were going to lose the House when, a few weeks before the 1994 election, I interviewed people shopping at the Piggly Wiggly supermarket in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. They were convinced Clinton had raised their taxes. Yet when I learned what they earned, it turned out they would get a tax decrease. (Folks were skeptical when I told them that.) The Kentucky congressional seat had been held by a Democrat since the Civil War, but it flipped to the Republicans in 1994 and has stayed that way ever since.

Glenn wrote the Post’s Fact Checker column (the one with the Pinocchios seen at the top) and by the end of Donald Trump’s first term, it attributed 30,573 false or misleading claims to the Orange Menace. That came to 21 false or misleading claims each day of that term.

They broke down this way:

First year: 6 claims per day

Second year: 16 claims per day

Third year: 22 claims per day

Final year: 39 claims per day

Look. The corrupt, rapist, racist, pedophile conman hasn’t been doing anything that Republicans hadn’t been doing for decades.

The lie that the people in Hopkinsville bought in 1994 is typical of the lies the GOP has been feeding its constituents before and ever since. Hopkinsville is in Kentucky’s 1st congressional district, and is represented by James Comer. You know, the guy who said this:

So it makes sense Comer lies to his constituents and treats them with contempt. He believes they’re idiots. They fell for GOP lies in 1994. They fall for MAGA lies now.

And they keep reelecting him to Congress.
