The Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville recently announced that its Humanitarian of the Year Award will go to former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

The ceremony is schedule for Nov. 7.

Kaepernick, pictured above wearing No. 7, was discarded by the NFL, not because of subpar play, but because he actually took a knee and said police brutality was wrong.

MAGA lost its shit when he did it. As a result, a successful quarterback, in his prime, was discarded, while right-wing freaks throughout the NFL are still playing. Like the idiot kicker in Kansas City and the fascist quarterback with the New York Giants.

Of course, these political stands are endorsed by a league that doesn’t care about the brain damage the sport is causing, partly because the teams are owned by a bunch of billionaires whose only concern is how much money they can get out of their pain.

But Kaepernick had the audacity of saying thug cops shouldn’t be murdering innocent Black people in the streets, and the NFL’s response was “NOW, YOU’VE CROSSED THE LINE.”

Here’s the sad part. Kaepernick is 38 years old. He could still be an NFL quarterback.

So while NFL supporters of a rapist, racist, pedophile Orange Menace conman are still in the league, making millions of dollars and spreading their venom to any media sucker who quotes them, an NFL quarterback who stood up for human rights was cast aside.

That’s all you need to know about the NFL.

There was an excellent article in the San Francisco Chronicle today involving Kaepernick and sports activism. The piece notes this:

Kaepernick, whose memoir will be released Sept. 15, will remain a significant historical figure. The fact that his protest took place in the NFL, the country’s most popular sport, in a league that performatively binds itself to the military and police and is run by conservative billionaires, set his protest apart. As did the swift retribution he faced.

It also notes:

Even as Kaepernick was being blacklisted by the NFL, his legacy carried on. During the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests after George Floyd was murdered by Minneapolis police and Breonna Taylor was shot to death in her Louisville home, Kaepernick jerseys were worn by many as a symbol of protest. 

The brutal evidence validating his original protest sadly kept pulsing through America. In August 2020, during the pandemic, the sports world came to a stop after Jacob Blake was shot four times in the back in Wisconsin. Naomi Osaka withdrew from a match, the Milwaukee Bucks refused to take the floor in a bubble playoff game, the NBA shut down for the day and other leagues followed suit. That same month Dream players wore “Vote Warnock” shirts in protest of their anti-BLM co-owner, Senator Kelly Loeffler, who eventually lost her seat to Warnock.
