I guess we’re supposed to be impressed by this (from Louisville Business First):
For the second year in a row, media titan Michael Bloomberg was the nation’s largest philanthropic donor.
That’s according to a data analysis by The Chronicle of Philanthropy, which found America’s top 50 donors gave away $16.2 billion last year through various foundations and donor-advised funds. That’s up from $11.9 billion in 2023.
But some philanthropy insiders aren’t certain that momentum will continue, thanks to a host of factors — including transparency concerns — that could affect donation strategies or spark more anonymous donations at all levels of giving.
Bloomberg gave a total of $3.7 billion in support of arts organizations, education, environmental causes, local government initiatives and public-health groups.
OK, let’s think about this for a second. Bloomberg’s net worth is $109.4 billion, according to Forbes Magazine. He gave away $3.7 billion of that.
Now very religious people, whose net worth isn’t even a grain of sand compared to the giant beachfront properties billionaires own, do this thing called tithing, in which they give one-tenth of their salary to their church annually. In many cases, especially in the lower income ranks, their annual salary is their net worth. So, if Bloomberg, pictured above, were using “tithing” as a guideline, he would have given $10.9 billion in philanthropy.
And here’s the thing: He’s given the most money, and other billionaires, who have far more than he does (Musk, Zuckerberg, Bezos), don’t even come close.
The top 50 billionaires in the U.S. have a combined net worth estimated at around $4.38 trillion as of late 2025. One tenth of that would be $438 billion. And we’re supposed to be impressed that they gave away a combined $16.2 billion last year?
Let’s look at it another way.
Elon Musk’s net worth is $491 billion. If he gave away 99 percent of his wealth, he would still have $4.91 billion.
Larry Ellison’s (there’s a name that doesn’t come up often) net worth is $349 billion. If he gave away 99 percent of his wealth, he would still have $3.49 billion.
Mark Zuckerberg’s net worth is $249 billion. If he gave away 99 percent of his wealth, he would still have $2.49 billion.
Jeff Bezo’s net worth is $235 billion. If he gave away 99 percent of his wealth, he would still have $2.35 billion.
GIve me a break! Their “philanthropy” doesn’t even cover the lint in their pockets.
