The Women’s Final Four NCAA tournament begins tonight with Texas against South Carolina at 7 p.m. and UConn facing UCLA at 9:30.
I’m a huge fan of women’s college basketball and have been following that tournament closely. I really don’t know and don’t care who’s in the men’s Final Four (OK, I’ll look it up: Florida-Auburn and Houston-Duke. Wow! Now I care even less!)
I was at the 2018 Final Four in Columbus when Louisville met Mississippi State and UConn faced Notre Dame. Both semifinals went into overtime, and the final ended with a buzzer beater. Here are the Louisville highlights:
And in the Notre Dame-Mississippi State final, here was the last shot:
Look at the crowd at the left of the screen. You’ll see behind the sea of yellow near the floor a guy in a white sweatshirt wearing a white baseball cap putting his hands on his head as the ball went in. That was me.
I rank this Final Four as the best ever, men or women. A close second would be when Louisville beat Michigan State in 2013, after Luke Hancock shot the lights out and was named the Most Outstanding Player. I was there, too.
But the point here today is that Louisville has lost their starting forward/center Nyla Harris to the transfer portal. Here’s the story from Sports Illustrated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After being the first player to depart the Louisville women’s basketball program following the end of their 2024-25 season, Nyla Harris has found her new home.
The junior forward is staying in the ACC, and has committed to play her final season at North Carolina, according to On3’s Talia Goodman.
Next year should be interesting. Most of the team will be sophomores and juniors. If they stick together, another Final Four could be in the Cards (like that play on words?) in the coming years.
