Well, the first weekend in October has passed, and another successful St. James Court Art Show is in the books. Despite a rainy Friday, artists at the show told me they had great first days, even with the reduced foot traffic.
Saturday and Sunday were beautiful days, and my neighborhood was overrun with art buyers and people having a good time. So by Sunday, every artist I talked to (and I talked to a bunch) said they had a successful weekend and intended to return next year.
Here’s the view from my porch:

And here are a few views from around the show:

According to our newly unnecessarily combined local news stations:
It was a picture-perfect end to one of the country’s biggest art shows this weekend.
Sunday marked the final day of the St. James Court Art Show in Old Louisville.
An estimated 300,000 people were expected to check out artists from across the country. The juried show brings together more than 600 artists to showcase sculpture, glass, paintings and drawings.
“We love the artwork,” Paul Perme said. “We love the community. We love the way the whole town comes together and we are actually right now in the process of redoing a home and looking for some beautiful artwork.”
The show brings in close to $5 million for the Louisville economy.
I did my part for the show. Since about 10 percent of those artists were selling their wares around my house, I helped them set up their booths the day before the show, as my wife helped direct various artists to their respective locations. One of the artists and I played guitars on my porch and in his booth at various times through the weekend.
And we spent a lot of money, bypassing the holiday rush when Christmas approaches. This was the time when we commoners can buy original art at reasonable prices before holiday shopping circuses begin.
Art show weekend is far more satisfying and egalitarian than Derby weekend in May. The art show is where anyone of any economic status can be a part of a cultural event, unlike the Kentucky Derby, which is a time for the rich to show off their wealth.
Or as the great John Lennon put it:
