The rivalry continues: Cards vs. Cats in women’s soccer

The NCAA Division I women’s soccer tournament began this past weekend, and the opening round of Bluegrass interest was held here Saturday in Louisville. The opponents were what you would want in a match in the commonwealth: No. 6-seed Louisville vs. Kentucky.

At the end of regulation, the score was 1-1. (If you were watching the game on ESPN, you would have seen me, my son and my grandson behind the net when Kentucky scored its goal, which isn’t shown in this YouTube video.) A 10-minute overtime period was added and ended with no scoring. A second 10-minute overtime period was added. Still no scoring.

Then, the match went into penalty kicks.

We didn’t storm the field in the end. You don’t want to have a five-year-old trampled by a screaming mob of teens and young adults. Leave that to the college kids. But it was an exciting end.

Next up, Louisville heads out of state to play No. 3-seeded Kansas, which defeated California Baptist 3-1 on Friday. That match will kick off at 4 p.m., Nov. 20, in Durham, N.C., and will air on ESPN+. Click here for the full tournament bracket.

Oh, and just one observation. This Louisville vs. Kentucky soccer match was only $10 per ticket. Louisville meets Kentucky this Saturday in women’s basketball at the Yum! Center. Those tickets are about $20 a piece. The ACC women’s field hockey tournament took place in Louisville just over a week ago. That three-day event was free to the public.

When Louisville played Kentucky in men’s basketball last week, ticket prices were reaching the $1,000 mark. The prices for the Louisville vs. Kentucky football match on Nov. 29 at L&N stadium are around $90 for the cheap seats.

If you want to take the family out to an affordable event, women’s college sports are a bargain and highly entertaining.
