Another “opinion piece” in the CJ manages to offer a premise, then completely debunk it in a link that’s supposed to support that argument. The headline on this winner is:
Polls show Americans don’t trust Democrats on crime, economy. And for good reason.
The story contains this justification for the headline:
Harry Enten, CNN’s chief data analyst, said that when it comes to crime, immigration and the economy, Americans still prefer the GOP over the Democratic Party.
“Who leads on the economy? Republicans, by 7. Immigration, Republicans by 13. How about crime, a big issue for Donald Trump and the Republicans? Look at that, lead by 22 points. … Whatever Democrats are doing, it ain’t working. Republicans have the lead on all three issues,” Enten said breathlessly on CNN about a September Washington Post/Ipsos poll. Enten continued with a damning declaration of Democrats’ political status.
So, let’s click on the Washington Post poll.
That’s strange? It shows complete dissatisfaction for Donald Trump and his policies.
Here are a few survey questions:
Do you approve or disapprove of the way Donald Trump is handling his job as president? (as of 9/15/25)
Approve: Net: 43; Strongly: 21; Somewhat: 22
Disapprove: Net: 56; Strongly: 43; Somewhat: 14
Overall, do you support or oppose what Trump has done since he took office in January? (9/15/25)
Support: Net: 41; Strongly: 22; Somewhat: 19
Oppose: Net: 53; Strongly: 41; Somewhat: 12
Would you rather see the next Congress controlled by the (Democrats, to act as a check on Trump), or controlled by the (Republicans, to support Trump’s agenda)? (as of 9/15/25)
Democrats to act as a check on Trump: 53
Republicans to support Trump’s agenda: 42
The overall poll is anti-Trump and anti-Republican. Here’s the link.
If a right-wing columnist links to a poll to reinforce an argument, the publishers of that piece should verify the link supports the premise of the column. If the item says the opposite of the poll, don’t run it.
But the CJ doesn’t do that.
And that’s why it’s failing.
