A flawed list of sports sites

A month ago, we posted on Gannett’s effort to develop a top 10 list of sports attractions in the U.S. Today, the CJ named the winners:

The Kentucky Derby Museum ranked highest at No. 2, followed by the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory at No. 4, Churchill Downs at No. 5 and the Muhammad Ali Museum at No. 10.

So, who made the top 10?

Best attraction for sports fans
        1) Boise State’s Blue Turf in Boise, Idaho.
        2) Kentucky Derby Museum in Louisville.
        3) Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Missouri.
        4) Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory in Louisville.
        5) Churchill Downs in Louisville.
        6) Field of Dreams Movie Site in Dyersville, Iowa.
        7) U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
        8) College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
        9) Texas Sports Hall of Fame in Waco, Texas.
        10) Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville.

Seriously? The Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., and the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass., don’t make the list? That’s absurd.

Louisville is overly represented here and should only have three spots, since the Kentucky Derby Museum and Churchill Downs should only count as one entry. They’re at the same place.

And I’d put the Muhammad Ali Center (pictured above) higher up in the list, since, at one time, Ali was the most famous person in the world and regularly praised his Louisville roots. Plus, it is one of the better civil rights and human rights sites in the country. Not to mention the cool boxing history lessons.
