This is your life (and the GOP is planning to take it away)

From ActionNetwork.org:

All across Kentucky, families are doing what it takes to care for loved ones and keep food on the table. But even as our communities take on new challenges to keep up with the high cost of living, many lawmakers in Washington are pushing dangerous policies that take direct aim at our wallets.

The U.S. House passed legislation that would terminate health coverage and take food assistance away from hundreds of thousands of Kentuckians, all to offset a small portion of the cost of cutting taxes for the wealthy. Now, the Senate is nearing passage of its own version. If either of these bills become law, they would amount to the largest ever funding cut to both Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

More than one-in-three Kentuckians relies on Medicaid. SNAP, meanwhile, helps more than 575,800 with their food budgets. Both would see deep cuts under both Congressional plans and the harms would go far beyond those kicked off of the programs. In fact, one study shows that Kentucky has 35 rural hospitals that would be at risk for closure if proposed Medicaid cuts become law. That’s more than any other state. Another shows that Kentucky would see the nation’s largest decline in rural Medicaid spending under the House version of the bill.

The following is a list of the Kentucky hospitals identified as most at risk of closure under the proposed cuts to Medicaid:

  • Whitesburg ARH Hospital
  • Highlands ARH Regional Medical Center
