From the Courier Journal:
NASHVILLE — A small contingent of Louisville baseball fans along the right-field line at Hawkins Field provided the only red in a ballpark dominated by Vanderbilt’s home fans.
It was after midnight back at home, but they stayed long enough to see right-handed pitcher Jake Schweitzer lead the second-seeded Cardinals to a 3-2 win over top-seeded Vanderbilt on Saturday night. The freshman and Trinity High School graduate entered in the ninth inning and notched two strikeouts for the save.
“He’s earned it; we just didn’t give it to him,” U of L coach Dan McDonnell said. “Every time we gave him the ball, he ran out there and competed.”
It’s the second time in less than a month that the Cardinals have beaten the Commodores. On May 6, U of L took a 5-4 win over Vandy at home. The squad added another victory on the Commodores’ home field. Louisville is now one win from the super regionals and will play the winner of the elimination bracket on Sunday night. It would be the team’s first time back since 2023.
Here’s the game in 14 minutes:
Nice of the CJ to cover this, but it would have been better if it had covered other games during the season to let locals know how good the team is. As we noted in March, when the team was ranked 18th in the nation, there were great opportunities for locals to go to the ballpark and see some good baseball free of charge. But nothing appeared in the CJ, so that was a missed opportunity.
Now we can only watch on TV. The regional final is tonight at 9 p.m. against either Vanderbilt or Wright State. A win would put Louisville in the Super Regional.
Correction: The Super Regional take place at the highest ranked team’s home field. This post earlier referred to Omaha, which is the site of the College World Series.
