During our podcast this weekend, I was stunned by the realization that the four richest people in the world have a combined net worth of more than $1 trillion. As of today, according to the Forbes list of the world’s real time billionaires, those four Americans (Elon Musk: $460.4 billion; Larry Ellison: $248.4 billion; Larry Page: $246.2 billion, and Jeff Bezos, $233.5 billion) have a combined net worth of $1.188 trillion, an amount so outrageously big, I have to hold the calculator on my iPhone on its side to see the entire number.
So, time for another billionaires in perspective thought experiment.
Let’s say, in an alternate universe, these four American centibillionaires got together and decided: “Hey, just for kicks, let’s cover one state’s total budget for one year.” And let’s say the chose to cover Kentucky’s annual state budget, which hovers around $22 billion.
Now, let’s use for comparison four Kentuckians with the state median net worth of $73,150 each, or a total of $292,600. That means the four median income people would proportionally have to pay a combined $5,418 to match the four richest American’s “gift” to Kentucky. And note that the average Kentuckian pays about $2,600 in annual state income tax, so our four median income residents are already paying much more than what our four centibillionaires would fork out.
I can’t stress this enough: There are 15 Americans who have an individual net worth of more than $100 billion. That number has increased since April, when Forbes magazine ran a piece with the headline: The $100 Billion Club: These 15 People Have 12-Figure Fortunes. At that time, they were 15 people all over the world, not just in the U.S.
Meanwhile, all of Kentucky’s congressional Republicans voted in favor of a “horrors of socialism” referendum (which, in essence was a vote against Social Security, Medicare, the ACA, farm subsidies and a ton of other government services that keep people in this state alive) while they passed laws that put more money in the pockets of centibillionaires: You know, the people diving into their fortunes like Scrooge McDuck at the top of this post.
And our MAGA populace, who can barely feed their children and pay for their health care, keeps putting these GOP sycophants in office.
