Hoop dreams in the Ville

Thousands of middle- and high-school girls are spending the weekend at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center for the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League (or EYBL) tournament, which started Friday and goes through Monday.

It’s an impressive gathering of student athletes that involves access to 80 basketball courts all having games at the same time. In the main lobby area, you’ll find maps like the one below pointing you to the playing fields.

The quality of girls’ basketball is amazing. I attended games on Friday with my son and realized that the girls are much more competitive than boys; basketball was when I was playing back in the 20th century.

EYBL also has a tournament this weekend in Las Vegas. For those of you who can’t get to the venue, there’s a live stream. Click here to see some games.

My nephew’s daughter (grandniece) who is in middle school has traveled with her team from New York City, and their journey will take them to Chicago next week for the Nike Nationals.

The event also is sponsored by the WNBA and if you look carefully, you’ll see ESPN signs throughout the event, as well as signs for Ohio Basketball. And it’s an event with designated seating for college coaches to find the Caitlin Clarks of tomorrow. Posters throughout the venue show college and WNBA stars who have competed in past tournaments so this shows you that you’ll see future stars on the courts.

Enjoy the games.
