This letter to the editor of the CJ shows that state and local authorities continue to demean the minorities who live in this city:
Goodwill HQ. No hospital in the West End for 150 years, and finally businesses coming past the Ninth Street divide. Investors flooding homeowners to buy their homes. We just knew that these would be for revitalization of homes for working taxpayers. We were so happy and excited.
Little did we know the West End is formally being used as a dumping ground for every type of drug addict, sexual predators and any other illicit activity other communities reject. Look at how many recovery/ transitional home applications are currently in the West End and how more are being submitted. I feel like I’m Julia Roberts in “The Pelican Brief.”
We need help down here.
No, we don’t have the money or resources like the Joe Creason pickleball rejection, but we are a neighborhood that needs to protect our hood and its character from the rampant destruction of zombies walking the streets all hours of the day and night, syringes on the streets and the influx of the homeless. These people are being brought in from outside Jefferson County and the state.
This is by no means a race issue but seeing’s believing. The narrative is that there’s only Black people in the West End. Take a drive from Ninth Street to Shawnee Park via Broadway; you’ll see that is not true.
As much as I like the governor and mayor, they had knowledge of these plans. I feel that a terrible injustice has been done to the West End. I’m not convinced that they didn’t know what it would do to our neighborhood. The new sale of the NIA Center to build affordable housing is that just code for a warehouse of non-taxpayers?
WE NEED HELP AND SUPPORT!
This is typical behavior of officials who go out of their way to oppress minority communities. It’s no different than redlining or urban renewal.
I’ve seen this happen in other parts of the country. When I was growing up in New York, the city put a methadone clinic at the end of my block. Crime and drug abuse soared. Thieves broke into our apartment building and stole copper pipes for our plumbing so they could sell the metal to buy more drugs.
In San Francisco, the city destroyed the minority dominated Fillmore District in the name of urban renewal, devastating the Black population. SF’s black population was at 13 percent in 1970. Today, it’s less than half of that at 6 percent.
These atrocities happened in “liberal” cities. Louisville doesn’t match them on the political spectrum, and this behavior is repulsive.
