Musical interlude: When Men Were Gods

By an aspiring songwriter:

Do you want to go back to the days when men were gods?

Tie a virgin to an altar and then take away her heart.

Palaces and temples rise above the desert sand,

Slave built monuments to conquerors of land.

Bow before the Pharaohs. On your knees to temple priests.

Live your life in chains, no key to your release.

The sun is shining high at noon. Your soul is under clouds.

That’s the way things happened in the days when men were gods.

Face an inquisition. Blood frenzy on parade.

Watch the babies suffer in a children’s crusade.

Escape to the New World. It’s a chance you gotta take.

Make a home in Salem. Burn the witches at the stake.

Trade some beads for Africans and stuff ‘em on a boat.

If they die too quickly, toss em over, watch them float.

Steal the land of Cherokee.  Your guns will sway the odds.

That’s the way things happened in the days when men were gods.

Slave will get his freedom, mule and 40 acre plot.

Face an accusation and get strung up by a mob.

Robber barons deal and politicians applaud:

Screw over the little guy and count up what they got.

Czars and emperors quarrel, and then they bring the world to war.

Buildings burn. The decades pass. They’re fighting like before.

Nazis murder millions. Leave the bodies out to rot.

That’s the way things happened in the days when men were gods.

‘Cause in god mode, you can do the heinous crimes.

And in god mode, there’s no worry of jail time.

God mode just can’t be a chance to sacrifice the poor.

If God exists, you’d have to guess She’d want us to do more, like

Fight against discrimination. Strive to get the vote.

March against the war because you cannot give up hope.

Topple dirty leaders. Send their stooges off to jail.

See the tyrants fall. I need another coffin nail.

Cause the dawn is rising. Bring an end to all the dark.

When the revolution comes the addresses are marked.

For those who squandered billions while the homeless slept in parks.

That’s what’s going to happen on the day that I’m a god.
