From the Courier Journal:
U.S. Rep. Morgan McGarvey is co-sponsoring new legislation aimed at reinstating veterans caught in the mass federal employee layoffs under the Trump administration and protecting their positions.
McGarvey, a member of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, announced the new bill introduced by Rep. Derek Tran, D-California, Thursday. According to the language of the bill, also known as the Protect Veteran Jobs Act, all veterans who have been fired since Jan. 20 would be reinstated and remain in place until at least Jan. 20, 2029, when the next administration is sworn in.
“As we speak, the Trump administration is carrying out the biggest layoff of veterans in history – including tens of thousands announced just last night,” McGarvey said. “Veterans put on the uniform. They served something higher than themselves. They deserve better.”
So, is my congressman really taking a stand? Does he think this is going to pass? Has he even approached GOP members of the Kentucky congressional delegation to see if they support this bill? If they don’t, is he going into the district of these Republican legislators to hold town hall meeting to highlight the abdication of congressional responsibility by the state GOP?
There are things congressional Democrats can do to show they’re defending our rights. Introducing legislation that you know isn’t going to pass is meaningless, unless you’re ready to go on the attack when the legislation fails and clearly say the reason all of this is happening is because congressional Republicans care more about appeasing the Orange coup and getting money from the oligarchy than helping the people who live in one of the poorest states in America.
